Cormac McCarthy, the author of the fictional novel, The
Road, uses the tone of console to help the reader understand how the father
help the son through the apocalypse stage when his mother left. Knowing that
the mother of the little boy will leave and not come back of him in anyway, the
father tried to get the mother to say goodbye to the little boy. "Will you
tell him goodbye? No. I will not. Just wait till morning. Please. I have to to.
She had already stood up."(Page 49) The mother of the little boy do not
care about how her leaving can affect the little boy. She's right now only
thinking of herself, even though she won't survive alone, she rather be alone.
" He sank down and put his hand on top of his head, God, he said."
(page 62) The little boy's father is trying his best to keep the son and
himself alive and it seemed like he's overwhelmed by the situation that has
been brought upon him. And now he's reaction was to call on God for guideness.
"My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will
kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?" (Page 77) Not knowing
what he meant by he was appointed by God to take care of him, but i believe
that the father knows that he's the only person the boy has in his life and he
thinks that that was Go's plan from the beginning. McCarthy uses the tone of
console to help the reader understand why the father is doing everything he can
to protect the little boy. By that the reader know that if the boy was to be
alone and without no one, he wouldn't be able to survive the post apocalypse
stage of life.
